Escape Room Guide

EVERYTHING YOU
NEED TO KNOW

Whether you're on a weekend away with a group of friends or you just fancy rounding up the troops for a fun-filled activity with a mentally engaging twist, there's nothing quite like an escape room to bond with your friends over the course of a challenging, yet extremely fun, sixty minutes.

As the name suggests, you and your teammates will be locked in a room and the object is to escape before your allocated time runs out.

It is a race against the clock and those of a cool, measured demeanour will thrive in an environment that forces every member of the team to pitch in with an equal amount of effort.

A Game That is All About Brain
Instead of Brawn

Despite what the name of the game may suggest, this is not about breaking the door down in an attempt to succeed. Escape rooms are all about the ability to get to the bottom of clues, riddles and mind-melts.

Each time your team solves a conundrum, you will move to the next stage of the challenge before eventually securing your freedom.

Escape rooms are like a mixture of The Crystal Maze, Prison Break and Tomb Raider all thrown into the one pot - with a hint of CSI added in, just for good measure.

Certain clues may seem impossible to solve to some members of the team, yet be well within the capabilities of others. Then, just as you think the challenge is beyond you, you will solve a puzzle that nobody else can get to the bottom of. This will be a running theme of the entire challenge as a number of conundrums are broken down and the value of teamwork comes to the fore.

Ten Years of Growing Popularity

Escape rooms originated in Japan back in 2007 and, from there, they made their way to Singapore, the United States and Europe. There are more than 3,000 escape rooms across the world and, with popularity growing by the day, that figure is only going to swell.

Escape rooms are designed to cater for many different age groups and are just as suitable for parents with their small children as they are a group of adult friends.

Each challenge is different to the next, in that it carries a very specific theme and level of difficulty. Word of warning: the highest difficulty level is no walk in the park, so if you've never entered an escape room before, pick your level of difficulty wisely.

A Successful Escape Makes for the
Perfect Photo Opportunity

If you escape before the clock runs down, you will get to pose for the team photo that is so popular on social media sites at the moment - the photograph that illustrates your success in the escape room.

Do murder mysteries take your fancy? Perhaps something with a sci-fi twist or even an espionage theme? All of these themes and more are covered at Manchester's premier escape rooms - Lucardo - try your hand at  Contamination, Virginia House, Espionage, Gem Runner or The Dream!

Before you and your friends become a team in the room, you need to think like a team outside of it - and decide on a challenge that everyone can agree upon.

The feeling that comes with successfully negotiating an escape is extremely satisfying. Managing to escape has been compared, by many successful contestants, with the sensation of pride and achievement that accompanies doing well in a challenging psychological exercise — but this one has the added bonus of being a lot of fun.

Not everybody escapes within the allocated time - but everybody does walk away with a memorable experience under their belt.

A Real Conversation Piece for
the Rest of the Day

Either way, the discussion for the next hour or two after leaving the room is bound to be dominated by your time spent inside it.

As is the case in so many aspects of life, nothing beats in-the-flesh experience, so if at first you don't succeed, return to the escape room and master it the next time!

There are so many different themes, and the challenges are constantly being tweaked and re-imagined, so it is little wonder that escape rooms are becoming a repeat activity for groups of friends, family and even work colleagues on bonding days out.
