Part 1: A Fool-Proof Guide to Planning the Perfect Escape Game Outfit

Hello friends, it’s me, back again with another Escape Room FAQ article! Our topic of the day is not one we’re asked about a lot as game masters, but something we think would be valuable to discuss for future players regardless.

So, we’re asking ourselves: What Should I Wear to My Escape Game Experience?

Disclaimer: I will say that all the advice that follows is exactly that – my advice – and you’re welcome to take it or leave it as you want. I did have a whole team complete Corruption in high heels once (very impressive) so, as long as you’re happy and comfortable for your game, that’s all that matters for us!

With that said, let’s dive right in!

What should I wear to my escape game?

Wear anything you feel comfortable in! We want you to have a good time, and that will come from you feeling good and comfortable in what you’re wearing.

Jeans are fine, joggers are too. Flat shoes are a must, and be aware of any potential physical puzzles in the room, too. Escape rooms aren’t usually intensive enough to warrant you needing to don a full workout kit, but you may need to reach up high or crouch down low every once in a while.

You don’t need to worry about removing any jewellery or accessories here either – you’re going into an escape room, not a hospital scanner. Just be you!

What shouldn’t I wear to my escape game?

Please don’t wear anything restrictive. We want you to be comfortable and free to move around! This includes footwear – if you come wearing platforms or high-heels then we will worry you’ll fall or trip mid-game. Nobody wants that!

Many rooms also include small spaces, so perhaps leave your hoop skirts and hamburger costumes behind, too. We’d rather you didn’t squish fellow players.

Finally, pretty please could you also avoid anything offensive, such as harsh slogans or motifs, and clothing that would be deemed inappropriate for public wear. Not only are we a family venue, but your Game Master has to sit and watch you for an hour. Let’s keep things PG for everyone, shall we?

Can I get dressed up for an escape game?

Honestly, yes! While I wouldn’t wear my wedding dress to an escape room, I totally understand that “looking nice” is certainly something you might be striving for during your escape day out. After all, many teams choose to play as part of a unique date activity, day out with friends, night out with colleagues, etc, all valid reasons to want to go glam!

While we’re not recommending fancy suits, posh frocks, or smart shoes for our games, you can definitely still opt for smart casual attire if that’s what you feel best in. I’ve played escape games in dresses (comfy ones, mind-you,) and we do believe that wearing a tie makes you considerably smarter when it comes to puzzles.

If all else fails, you can always fall back on the classic “jeans and a nice top” combo. You’ll be fine!

Tips

· Check with the venue whether your booked room includes any physical gameplay elements such as crawling or climbing, so you know what to expect.

· Once you’ve settled on an outfit, do some stretches or swing your arms around a bit in front of a mirror. Can you move freely? Great. Struggling to lift those arms? Maybe re-consider that top.

· If you feel good, you’ll look good. Also, your brain will work better.

· All else fails, call a friend, and ask them to pick a ‘fit for you.

Does all that sound good to you?

So, in conclusion, comfort is key here, but you’re welcome to still look and feel like “you” as you enjoy your escape room.
